Teens take to the skies

Football and basketball are common activities high school students participate in, but some students in Albuquerque have taken up a more unique program - flying.
Television news station KRQE reports teenager Justin Denman and about 80 other high school students are learning how to fly airplanes at the Southwest Learning Center.
Denman has learned how to safely operate several different airplane models and is set to graduate from the program with a pilot's license, according to the station.
Many people never complete a pilots program, frequently citing costs for their decision to drop out. Southwest Learning Center aviation program director Greg Roark says there is a benefit to students paying the fees associated with flying.
"There's value in them paying, because there's a lesson to be learned that this costs money," Roark told the station.
For those who costs is a major consideration in their ability to participate in aviation-related activities, there are places that provide assistance. There are numerous scholarships available to aspiring pilots offered at many schools. The Upper Limit Aviation Flight school, for example, recently announced free courses for military veterans.
