Younger pilots drawn to aerial advertising

For young pilots who are interested in building up their experience, one option has long been to accept work for companies that specialize in aerial advertising.
However, this work has also drawn attention for its inherent dangers, as one recent incident in Ontario, Canada is helping to illustrate.
According to a report in the Toronto Star newspaper, aerial advertising work is dangerous and involves complex maneuvering for relatively low pay. A 23-year-old pilot was killed in a crash near the local Buttonville Airport last week, and some observers are suggesting the nature of the advertising work played a role.
The Star quoted the general manager of a flight school in London, Ontario as saying that "everybody in the industry kind of knows that people going into these kinds of jobs are the young pilots with less experience than the average pilot in the industry."
Elsewhere, at least one part of the United States has decided to do away with aerial advertising entirely. A report in the Maui News says that the Maui County Council has given its initial approval to a proposal that would ban the display of advertisements and other messages from an aircraft.
