Alaska has been in the headlines a lot recently due to the recent airplane accidents, including one involving former Senator Ted Stevens. The state's weather conditions make flying through it a challenge, especially for those who aren't used the environment.
Despite all the attention given to the recent accidents, experts say that flying is safer now than it was years ago.
"The accident rate is down, especially if you look back 15 or 20 years," said Alaska Aviation Safety Foundation board chairman Carl Siebe, according to the Alaska Dispatch. "We are definitely making progress. It's about two steps forward and one step back."
There are multiple factors that are contributing to safer flying conditions. One can attribute the safer skies to better technology and increased education. The Federal Aviation Administration even created a website devoted to the cause of educating pilots to make flying less dangerous.
Of course, following simple precautions canbe a person's best defense when in the sky. Proper training and being alert can also help pilots keep themselves and others safe.
