According to a recent Forbes article, investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are focusing on data from an onboard computer and camera system recovered from the modified P-51 Mustang that pilot Jimmy Leeward crashed at an air race in Reno, Nevada, last week, killing 11 and injuring 74.
The NTSB released a report that did not provide details as far as the cause of the crash was concerned, but reports indicate that a piece of the plane may have broken off as it was climbing, causing the pilot to lose control.
Evaluating eyewitness accounts and visual evidence, NTSB officials said that the plane lost control after what appeared to be a piece of the fuselage broke off from the aircraft when Leeward turned on his final approach. The airplane's path became suddenly erratic, according to the source, before going into a steep climb and then pitching downward into the crowd below.
Aviators know very well the risks they assume when flying, and many choose to take out pilot insurance policies offered through pilot organizations. In many cases, a standard life insurance policy does not account for the specific life and property insurance needs of an aviator, and a pilot insurance policy obtained through an organization can often offer discounted group rates.
