Research looks into jet fuel pumps

November 17, 2010, 05:21 pm

Cavitation can ruin an aircraft's jet fuel pump. A research team led by professors from Notre Dame looked at the phenomenon and how it effects the lifespan of materials.

The research performed is different than previous studies. Earlier efforts focused on boats and the like. Professor Patrick Dunn helped lead the study efforts. He says understanding cavitation and its impact on jet fuel pumps is of great importance for military aircraft and those which travel in challenging terrain.

"Manufacturers still rely heavily upon trial-and-error in design," says Dunn. "If they were confident that a computer-designed pump would work as predicted, new pumps could be lighter, more efficient and have longer lifetimes."

It's important for pilots to have their airplanes inspected on a regular basis. A professional will know how to best repair damaged pieces as well as prevent parts from wearing down so much that they pose a hazard. In addition to properly maintaining a plane, pilot insurance is a good idea to have just in case. Even the most well-maintained aircraft and trained pilot can experience unforeseen circumstances.
