Several airlines have decided to merge while others have undergone cost-saving measures. However, despite the rocky economic climate, some airlines are still prosperous.
Spirit Airlines, for example, is set to expand its operations. The airline is reaching out to have 11 new routes, including five new cities: Plattsburgh and Niagara Falls, New York, Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Charlestown, West Virginia, Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas.
The airline, which is based out of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina has also helped the local economy. Myrtle Beach International Airport director Michael La Pier says he is glad to see the airline grow.
"This commitment is indicative of Myrtle Beach's position as a world-class, value-driven destination with great appeal for airlines and visitors alike," says La Pier. "Our community has worked extremely hard to increase air service and we are particularly excited to see daily service to Washington, D.C. via Reagan National."
There were more than 680,000 passenger enplanements and deplanements this year at Myrtle Beach International Airport, according to their website. Such statistics show an increase from last year's figures.
