Many people like reading because it allows them to imagine and learn of new experiences. Having good reading skills is also crucial to a person's academic success. That is one reason why U.S. Airways is collaborating with Reading is Fundamental to help engage children with literature.
Part of the third "Fly with US. Read with Kids" program is the Read with Kids Challenge where people record the amount of time they spend reading to children.
US Airways and RIF aim to have participants log over 10 million minutes of reading between September 1 and October 31. This year's goal is an increase from last year, says US Airways chairman and CEO Doug Parker.
"Reading, much like flying, takes you on journeys to new places and helps you discover new worlds," says Parker. "By partnering with RIF, US Airways is honored to help children in the communities where our employees live and work discover the joy of reading and provide them with a better foundation for academicand economic success."
Parents should begin reading to their children early on. The Michigan Department of Education says developing reading skills from birth to age 8 is the most crucial period for development in children.
