Mark Kelly, the husband of U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and U.S. astronaut, recently visited students at the West Michigan Aviation Academy in Grand Rapids, Michigan. At the event, Kelly spoke with students about his adventures as the Space Shuttle commander, as well as shared encouraging words from his wife.
More than 2,000 aviation students attended the forum, where Kelly recalled stories of his days as a fighter pilot, explorations as an astronaut and the challenges he overcame to reach those positions. He also shared personal obstacles he faced when his wife was shot and required significant care in order to recover from the head injury.
When discussing his challenges while working as a pilot and astronaut, Kelly told the students he valued decision-making skills he acquired throughout his life to help him in the Navy and NASA. The team-building exercises that are often used by business leaders can apply in other fields such as aviation to help keep colleagues connected and safer in the sky.
Another way to stay safe while flying is to purchase pilot insurance as an added precaution.
Kelly emphasized the importance of determination and perseverance to achieve success in the aviation industry. He encouraged students to never give up on their dreams and face challenges and adversity head-on, as the experience would only make them stronger in the future. Kelly started his aviation career as a fighter pilot when he flew combat missions in the Gulf War. In order to advance to NASA's space program, Kelly had to push himself and face his fears.
