Basic math needed for pilot safety

The number of general aviation pilots has been steadily declining. In fact, many aspiring professionals do not complete pilot school. While cost is often cited as one of the main reasons people not participate in aviation, there could be another major factor - math.
Many people can share a horror story or two about their mathematical skills, or lack thereof. Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Foundation president Bruce Landsberg wrote on the AOPA website that an aspiring pilot doesn't have to be a mathematician to be a successful in the industry. However, he notes basic arithmetic skills are essential.
"Pilots do need basic math for practical estimates and to read charts and graphs - all within the capability of liberal arts majors," writes Landsberg.
There has been a recent push to get younger students more involved in math and science subjects at an early age. Several summer camps can be found around the country showing children practical applications of the classroom skills they've learned.
Many industry professionals have warned that the future of aviation could be at serious risk if there are not enough properly educated and trained people to enter the workforce.
