Some New Yorkers could make out well if the Boeing NewGen Tanker becomes the U.S. Air Force's next aerial refueling aircraft.
Earlier this summer, the aircraft company submitted a proposal to replace 179 of the Air Force's 400 existing KC-135 aircraft.
Currently, Boeing employs 85 people in New York. However, that number could increase to 580 and provide an estimated $30 million in economic impact.
Many people would benefit from adding so many jobs to the area. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says the unemployment rate is currently at 9.5 percent.
Boeing Tanker Programs supplier management director Mark DeVoss says Boeing is pleased to have New Yorkers on their team.
"Boeing's New York workers are among the most talented anywhere in the world, which is why we're honored to have them as members of the NewGen Tanker team," said DeVoss. "Together with tens of thousands of Boeing employees across America, New York workers will provide the U.S. Air Forcewith the most capable, survivable, combat-ready tanker aircraft at the lowest cost to the American taxpayer."
The aircraft maker asserts that their NewGen Tanker will save taxpayers money since it's more fuel-efficient.
