The Chattahoochee Valley Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association based out of the Columbus Airport in Georgia recently announced it carried 248 Young Eagles in 2011, 13 of which flew on December 31.
The EAA's Young Eagles program aims to introduce children ages 8 to 17 to general aviation through free introductory flights. Pilots and ground crews volunteer to work with the program that makes aviation fun for curious children. The Georgia chapter hosted a Young Eagles Rally once a month to attract new kids, as well as posted events on its website and built strong relationships with local youth organizations to help create interest in the aviation industry.
"EAA embodies the spirit of aviation, and our chapter’s Young Eagles events demonstrate that spirit in a very real way,” said Ernie Kelly, EAA Chattahoochee Valley Chapter president. “It is our hope children who flew with us might go on to pursue aviation as a career or hobby."
According to the Times Reporter, the 1077 Chapter of the EAA is also offering free flights for students in grades seven through nine living in the Dover-New Philadelphia, Ohio, area. The 30-minute flight is conducted by a licensed pilot with pilot insurance, and students are able to fly the plane themselves while supervised. Only students who complete a motivational and guidance course are rewarded with the flight.
