Reno air races scheduled for 2012

Last September, a deadly crash occurred at the Reno air race, pushing many organizers of the event to want to cancel it for 2012. However, Association President Mike Houghton said the event is still planned for this coming September, and tickers are already selling.
Houghton said the organizers of the air race will consult with a panel of experts to ensure the event is safe for both pilots and spectators. The panel, which will include former National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Jim Hall, will have 90 days to draft up revisions to the format of the race to make it safer. The crash last year killed 11 people and injured more than 70 spectators, illustrating the importance of pilot insurance.
The crash in 2011 was captured from numerous angles and was shown on television and the internet, prompting officials to consider canceling the historic event. However, the event organizers decided to make changes to the show and hold the event, which was first launched more than 40 years ago, the source reported.
Reno news source Kolo TV reported pilots, mechanics and technicians in the Reno area were thrilled when they learned the air race was still going to take place this year. Aviation professionals have a stake in the event, as teams work together to compete at the race.
