Group voices opposition to license change

A pilot license could end up costing people some extra cash if a proposal from the Federal Aviation Administration is approved.
The proposed changes would require licenses to have a photograph, similar to that on a driver's license. The Society of Aviation and Flight Educators are voicing their opposition to the measure, saying increases costs could be as much as $210 per license. Student pilots would also be required to obtain a plastic card with their photograph on it.
SAFE member Robert Hadow says he isn't sure if the proposal will achieve the desired effects.
"The FAA has a legal reason to replace the certificate system for the second time in six years, and apparently sees this as an opportunity to increase fees and staffing," says Hadow. "The aviation community needs to get engaged in this issue to get something that works, rather than a regression to a paper-based 8710 system requiring a physical visit to a FSDO or testing center."
The proposed license change isn't the only regulation pilots have been forced to contend with of late. Last year, the FAA made a proposal to change the amount of hours pilots could be on the clock before having to be relieved to rest.
