Female pilots are a bit of a rarity. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, less than 6 percent of pilots are women.
To help more women become involved in the aviation industry, next year Women in Aviation International is awarding 13 scholarships valued at over $92,000.
The scholarships are available for people with interest ranging from flying as a hobby to those looking to become aeronautical engineers. Able flight will also be offering a scholarship geared towards those with physical disabilities.
"We'd like to grow the number of scholarships significantly by working with Women in Aviation to increase awareness of this avenue for women with disabilities to become pilots," said executive director of Able Flight Charles Stites. "I applaud Women in Aviation, International on its success in securing funding for scholarships for women to enter aviation; WAI's track record is nothing short of amazing, especially in such difficult times."
There is certainly room to grow in the aviation industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, aviation jobs are expected to grow 12 percent by 2018.
