A retired NASA space shuttle could be calling Seattle it's permanent home. The Museum of Flight and members of the state's tourism industry hoisted a flag to the top of the Space Needle to show their desire to bring the aircraft to the state.
Wings Over Washington executive director Bonnie Dunbar has been spearheading efforts to bring the space shuttle to the state. He says such a piece housed at the museum would highlight their standing as a leader in aviation.
"A Space Shuttle at the Museum of Flight will help to educate the public about why and how we explore the worlds around us, will encourage the current generation of engineers as they design and build new spacecraft for that exploration, and will inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers to continue exploring the frontiers of space," says Dunbar.
Furthermore, tourism officials say having the retired spacecraft would bring in additional revenue to the area in and serve as an educational tool.
There has been growing concern over children's lack of interest in science and technology fields. Engaging children at an early age into such industries is important to the long-term success of the aviation industry.
