St. Cloud State University aviation program to close

Another college aviation program may soon cease to exist. St. Could State University's aviation program is on the list of degree offerings set to be cancelled.
Currently enrolled students in the program will be permitted to complete their degrees, but new entrants will not be accepted.
Financial constraints are forcing the school to cut the program. The St. Cloud Times is reporting that St. Cloud State University vice president for academic affairs Devinder Malhotra says too much money is needed to keep the program in operation.
"Between operating expenses, additional faculty and equipment upgrades .... we would need roughly an additional $500,000 annually to make the program sustainable in the near and middle-term," the paper quotes Malhotra as saying.
Recently, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign announced its intentions to end their Institute of Aviation. Similar to St. Cloud State University, they cited financial concerns for their decision.
Similarly, the closing of such programs stands to impact airports near both campuses. The paper reports the St. Cloud Regional Airport gets a quarter of its traffic from the school.
