Airports serve an important function in our country beyond travel. The economic impact of the transportation centers cannot go unnoticed.
Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley understands the crucial role aviation serves and has declared September "General Aviation and Community Airport Month."
"I am pleased to recognize this vital system of community airports and aircraft that contributes $2.1 billion in to our local economy and creates nearly 6,800 jobs to our state," said O'Malley. "It's important that we continue to support this industry, which is vital to not only Maryland, but the entire country."
Maryland is home to 36 airports that serve over 8,000 pilots and employ more than 104,000 people in aviation-related occupations.
The governor also points out that Maryland residents rely on airplane transportation for a variety of needs outside of personal or business travel. Airplanes are also needed to help with medical situations andserve an important function in times of disaster.
Similarly, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson also declared September "Aviation and Aerospace Appreciation Month." More than 4,800 pilots and 60 airports help generate close to $761 million in economic impact to the state.
