Families of the Flight 3407 victims who have been advocating for the Aviation Safety Bill are one step closer to ending their fight.
It's believed that the bill will pass the House and Senate as early as the end of the week.
Among other things, the bill will require commercial pilots to have have 1,500 hours under their belt, up from 250 hours, according to a release issued by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and posted on WKBW.com. The new regulations also seek to enhance the quality of the training pilots receive.
The new legislation would also require the Federal Aviation Association to say why they are not going to fulfill all or part of a recommendation.
"While we have taken a long and circuitous route to get here, our ultimate goal of vastly improving aviation safety in this country is within our reach,'' says Senator Chuck Schumer. "I will say it before and say it again, it is the 3407 families and their tireless advocacy that have made this possible. The Congress is but a conduit for their passion, drive and determination."
