Aircraft fuel under scrutiny in Alaska

July 15, 2010, 04:01 pm

A familiar topic has resurfaced in Alaska - aircraft fuel content. Many of the planes in Kodiak use leaded gas, an additive no longer allowed to fuel cars, says the Kodiak Daily Mirror.

Kingfisher Aviation pilot Glen Eaton told the paper that every few years discussion about the Environmental Protection Agency banning leaded fuel for aircraft arises, but action is never taken.

"They've been trying to do this since the 1960s. It comes up every new administration. They get focused on it, but it doesn't happen because it would decimate the aviation industry in Alaska," Eaton told the paper. "I honestly don't believe it will pass, because every time it gets brought up Alaska representatives come out against it."

General aviation jets accounted for the consumption of 1,289 million gallons of fuel use in 2006, according to the Research and Innovative Technology Administration Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Agencies propose banning leaded fuel because itit is toxic to the environment. The EPA says that aviation gas contains the highest level of lead content and those that work closely around aircraft are at a higher risk.ADNFCR-3158-ID-19892067-ADNFCR
