Fair wages are important to for attracting and maintaining employees in the long term. This is important for companies to keep in mind as they continue to find ways to cut costs.
The Dallas Morning News reports that Michael Boyd, president of Boyd Group International, says airlines need to begin increasing wages. He asserts that the industry will not be able to attract pilots in particular without paying them more.
"What we're seeing is that compensation has to go up dramatically through all levels. You've got to attract people, so you're going to have to pay them," the paper reports Boyd as saying during a conference. "And if they're going to have to have that much training and expertise, you're going to have to raise the rates you pay them."
Wages for airline pilots can vary depending on experience, airline and location. Data from the U.S. Department of Labor show wages for pilots can range from approximately $30,000 to $120,000.
Some experts have expressed concerns over wages and costs associated with training new pilots. They say such factors may further influence a person's decision to enter, or not enter, the industry.
