Southwest pilots earn a raise

October 22, 2010, 04:41 pm

With the economy still turning around and unemployment hovering around 10 percent, a number of people would feel fortunate to have a job. However, business is going well and one airline is translating their profitability into raises.

The Southwest Airlines Pilots' Association has announced pilots will be receiving a 3 percent raise. They note, however, they originally didn't anticipate any sort of increase in compensation.

In a statement, SWAPA president Carl Kuwitzky expressed delight in the positive news and said he hoped more company growth is on its way.

"This raise is good news for both our pilot group and Southwest Airlines. The pilots have been willing to tie our pay increases to the success of Southwest Airlines," said Kuwitzky. "Our pilots showed great leadership and confidence in our company and we are excited about a future with an improving economy which allows our company to maintain its profitability."

According to website payscale.com, the salary range for a commercial airline pilot is more than $80,000. As with many things, a pilot's pay can vary depending on several factors.
