AOPA commissions research to find reason from decline in pilots

October 12, 2010, 10:46 am

Data pointing to a decline in pilots and aviation industry professionals continues to mount. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association says up to 80 percent of aspiring pilots discontinue their training before completing their certification programs.

Earlier this year, a study found that many aviation employees were dissatisfied with their current work environment and were considering looking elsewhere for employment options.

AOPA has been spearheading efforts to turn such trends around. The association has commissioned research to find out what is fueling the decline in pilot certification completion. AOPA notes that while many in the industry may have an idea as to what is stopping many pilots from completing their training, this will be the first time official research has been conducted on the matter.

"There is no quick fix and we must work together to create a new training paradigm that will allow more student pilots to fulfill their aviation dreams," says AOPA president Craig Fuller.

Costs may be one reason for the decline in pilots and aviation professionals. A couple of universities announced plans to discontinue degree programs in aviation-related fields, noting that operation costs exceeded income from the programs.
