The Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund recently announced they will be providing educational scholarship funds worth over $11 million this year. More than 600 families of airplane crews and passengers along with other members of the 9/11 community have been chosen as recipients.
Since the award's inception in January 2002, the Families of Freedom Fund has helped finance the educations of more than 1,600 people with more than $60.5 million in scholarships. Scholarship amounts vary, with the average being worth more than $18,000.
Scholarship America executive director of designated funds Rhianna Quinn Roddy says those interested in applying for next year's scholarship can do so in October.
"The Families of Freedom Fund remains an important resource for the 9/11 community," says Quinn Roddy. "We are proud that this Fund is able to provide so many needy families with essential financial assistance. At Scholarship America, we are committed to helping eligible students realize their goals and potential through education."
Thousands lost their lives during the attack, including 147 people on the two flights.
