The process of earning a pilot's license can be complex. Depending on a number of limiting factors including weather, pay and aircraft type, general aviation pilots need different certifications. According to Oregon Public Broadcasting News, a 17 year old pilot from Dayville, Oregon, has a large part of the process figured out.
Jay Buce began flying through the Mission Aviation Training Academy in his junior year of high school and recently received his pilot's license, celebrating with a flight over the Puget sound to Port Angeles, Washington. Buce's father, Tom, is a pilot as well, and Jay credits his love of aviation to his father's encouragement.
"My dad really helped me, helping me study for ground school and the written test," Buce told the source. "He's helped me to not procrastinate and keep moving forward. It seemed kind of like nagging, but it wasn't. He pushed me to get this far."
Jay intends to continue his education in the air, and plans to seek instrument certification to fly in poor visibility situations. He also plans to attend airframe and powerplant classes to become A&P certified, capable of making repairs to his plane and becoming more independent as an aviator.
Many pilots choose to purchase pilot insurance policies, which provide better coverage for aviators than do standard life insurance products.
