Pilots try to end outsourcing

September 3, 2010, 08:43 pm

Some Continental and United Airlines pilots may describe their work environment as more stressed than usual as of late. Pilots from both airlines are trying to end the outsourcing of flying to regional partners.

The Allied Pilots Association recently expressed their support for the pilots, saying they believed the outsourcing of jobs should be stopped.

United Airlines master executive council chairman Captain Wendy Morse says choosing less-experienced pilots could be hazardous.

"United and other airlines must stop outsourcing to the lowest subcontractor bidder, and instead avail themselves of the experienced pilots who find themselves out on the street," said Morse. "We cannot afford for airline management to place dollars ahead of safety."

It's hoped that negotiations can be made between the pilots and management before the years end, when the merge is scheduled to take place.

The Wall Street Journal says other issues plague the airlines. Theynote 1,400 United pilots and 147 Continental pilots are on furlough. Continental's pilots' union head Jay Pierce expects all of those on furlough to be called back, according to the WSJ.ADNFCR-3158-ID-19935968-ADNFCR
