Research finds obstacles holding women aviators back

The number of female pilots has never been high. However, the number pursing the activity is declining as interest in general continues to erode. The topic has been of much discussion among industry insiders for some time.
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association reports on a study which investigated the forces behind women not participating in aviation. They say pilot Penny Hamilton's research included interviews or surveys with nearly 300 women.
While cost was cited as one of the main obstacles for women, AOPA reports a lack of mentors and support also prevent women from engaging in flying. A lack of confidence was also expressed by participants.
"Most of them mentioned the importance of feeling comfortable with the pilot groups on the airport and their reaching out and being friendly," Hamilton told AOPA.
There are ways aviators can try to make the activity more affordable. Scholarships can help cover the cost of enrolling in education program and lessons, for example. Promoting women in aviation through specific programs and activities may also help women gain the support and camaraderie they seek.
