The Wichita Aero Club held its second annual "On-Air" summit recently. Among the attendees were five senior executives who discussed major issues facing general aviation.
National Business Aviation Association president and CEO Ed Bolen said during the summit, "the general aviation industry isn't huge, but it's not insignificant."
According to the Wichita Aero Club, there are 600,000 general aviation pilots that help employe 1.2 million people through airports and related upkeep.
The number of general aviation pilots has trended downward over the years. Many people who train to be quit before the program is finished. While there are many reasons for this decline, cost is certainly one of the biggest.
With the economy still struggling to recover, many people simply cannot afford the high costs associated with flying and aircraft upkeep. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association recently reported on a study that found financial woes are one of the reasons women aren't more involved in the activity.
There are, however, options for those who are interested in picking up the craft. Lakeland College in Wisconsin, for example, recently announced it would be offering an aviation minor to its curriculum.
