Safety tips for pilots returning to the sky

September 14, 2010, 09:00 pm

There are certain life events that take many people away from their life's passions. Whatever the reason, pilots who are returning to flying should follow a few precautions.

Before taking to the skies again, there are a few things pilots should study. The Federal Aviation Administration says pilots who are getting back into flying need to sharpen up on their knowledge of airspace regulations.

It may also be a good idea for returning pilots to spend some time in the cockpit next to a more seasoned pilot. Depending on how long it's been since a person has last flown, a lot may have changed in the industry.

Private pilot Dan Williams says people should continue to learn more about proper flying techniques.

"Make an effort to expand and test your knowledge in all areas," Williams said according to the FAA. "And, if you're not asked to do it on your check, ask for it to be reviewed. This will help you feel more confident when you're on your own again."

If pilots have been away from flying for a significant amount of time, they may also need to familiarize themselves with new technology. Garmin, for example, has created a number of new GPS devices aimed at making flying easier and safer.ADNFCR-3158-ID-19940169-ADNFCR
