Social media helps the aviation world connect

Social media has been hailed as a great invention bringing people and businesses together. From Twitter to blogs, there are more ways now than ever to communicate. While Facebook, for example, started out as a way for some college students to stay in touch, it has exploded into a popular media platform.
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association highlights how social networking tools can help bridge the gap between pilots and aspiring pilots at a time when the number of aviators is dwindling.
Rod Rakic, of social network site myTransponder, offered tips for using the platform during a panel discussion at the AOPA Aviation Summit.
"As the airport fences get higher, and it gets tougher for people interested in aviation to find mentors in traditional ways, social media channels have opened up new ways for people on the outside, to connect to people inside the aviation community," said Rakic.
More than 500 million people use Facebook, with half of them visiting the site daily, according to the networks website. Furthermore, 200 million people access the website via their cell phone daily.
