The University of Illinois and St. Cloud State University both recently announced proposed plans to close their respective aviation programs. While the closure of such programs may be troubling for some students, it means there is potential for other programs to expand.
The Rockford Register Star reports that Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University sees potential growth as a result of other Midwestern school's plans to permanently ground their aviation programs.
The school has an edge over other universities in that they are solely focused on the aviation industry.
Embry-Riddle's residential campus executive vice president Frank Ayers told the paper that the school predicts a growing need for pilots.
"We see the market for airline pilots, over the long term, to be pretty strong but over the past couple of years it has been pretty light," says Ayers. "But airlines are flying pretty full airplanes right now."
Delaware Technical and CommunityCollege also plans to grow their aviation program, according to the Delaware Wave newspaper. The program at Delaware Tech focuses on aviation maintenance. The paper says the airframe maintenance program is the first of three potential disciplines.
