University of Illinois may end aviation program

Aspiring aviators may have one less school to study at next year. The Stewarding Excellence is recommending that the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign close its Institute of Aviation.
According to the report, the school could save up to $750,000 a year by ending the program. Current students will be allowed to complete their program and a pilot certification program could remain.
Junior Aviation major Mark Tronrud told the school newspaper, the Daily Illini, that he traveled far to attend the school's aviation program.
"We have some of the best instructors in the nation here; I came here all the way from Denver because I liked the aviation school," Tronrud told the paper. "It may be small, but it's a strong, solid program."
Tronrud continued to tell the paper that he believes the school will ultimately lose money by ending the aviation program. Currently, the university supports Willard Airport, but Tronrud believes that without the aviation program the airport will suffer.
At this point, the future of the Institute of Aviation remains in the air. The proposal has to go through the Senate first. However, a decision could be reached as early as January 2011.
