Washington's Renton Municipal Airport earned a special honor this month. The facility holds the distinction of taking 170 females on introductory flights in one day, according to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
The Centennial of Women Pilots, an organization honoring female aviators, bestowed the title to Renton Municipal Airport. AOPA reports Ghana's Kpong Field Airport previous held the title with 97 flights.
The event's organizer, Karlene Petitt, wrote in her blog how great the experience was, reports AOPA. Petitt also highlighted the $100 drawing to help finance future flights for females before the end of the year.
Professional female pilots and air traffic controllers also participated in the event, says AOPA.
The number of private pilots has declined over the years, which holds particularly true for female aviators. Last month, AOPA reported on research highlighting some of the reasons why women aren't participating in the hobby in larger numbers. Finances and a lack of confidence were cited as the main factors.
When a person is ready to take to the skies, he or she should consider life insurance for pilots. While flying is generally safe, it's important to take all the necessary precautions.
