FAA proposes new look for pilot certificates

A pilot's certificate may soon look very similar to most people's driver's licenses. The Federal Aviation Administration is proposing a makeover to the document's current look.
To increase safety, the FAA is suggesting a pilot's photograph be placed on the certificate, which would have to be renewed every eight years. Private pilots would have five years to comply with the new rule if it is passed and airline pilots would have three years.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says updating pilot certificates is an important security step.
"The Department of Transportation is committed to keeping the traveling public safe," says LaHood. "This is an important safeguard to help make sure individuals can't pose as pilots, whatever their intentions."
I.D.s with enhanced security have been issued to motorists for some time. In Virginia, for example, motorists aren't even allowed to smile in their photographs. The measure has been implemented in anticipation of future security measures.
In addition to having proper I.D., pilot insurance is also a good idea. The coverage can be extremely helpful to loved ones should something go tragically wrong while flying.
